About SADTU

The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) was launched in Johannesburg on the 6th of October 1990. This was an historic occasion, bringing together a range of racially divided teacher organisations into a unitary structure with a progressive vision. In doing so SADTU challenged the legitimacy of ethnic education departments and made an important contribution to the struggle for non-racialism in South Africa.SADTU presently represents more than 250 000 teachers and workers in the education sector, making it the largest teacher organisation in the country.
